It’s the least visited capital in Africa, which means you’ll be probably the only tourist there. Dodoma is very safe, no traffic jams, everyone is very chill with you, wherever you come from. From its laid-back vibe to its rich cultural heritage, Dodoma has quite a lot to offer for a day trip. Whether you’re into history, nature, or just wondering how is the local atmosphere in the capital city, Dodoma won’t disappoint.
From our own experience, we would definitely recommend going there for a single day trip. There are daily flights from Dar es Salam to Dodoma, with Air Tanzania or Precision Air. The best thing to do would be to catch the morning flight, then return with the late afternoon/evening flight. One day is largerly enough to visit the capital city of Tanzania. Note that guided visits must be booked in advance, you can contact the Tanzanian Parliament staff here. Be aware that they might probably not answer you, but if they do, it’s always a chance to get into the most important building of the capital (and for free 😎).

When we went there (on a sunday afternoon), the mosque was closed as we were outside of the praying times, however we waited about 45 min and a young kid opened the mosque main door for us so we could visit before the prayer time.

When we were visiting the capital city, our tuktuk driver told us if we were interested in visiting UDOM, one of the biggest universities in Africa. Our driver was actually a Science teacher during the week (and tuktuk driver outside of his classes). It was a great surprise talking and exchanging with all the students, who were definitely not used to seeing tourists coming there. You’ll also be surprised by the huge buildings of the university campus, one looking like the US Capitol. The University of Dodoma is about 25 min from downtown, so if you have your return flight in the afternoon, make sure to plan it well. You can check here for the UDOM opening times as well as holidays period (we don’t recommend visiting during holidays, so you’ll have the chance to meet local and international students).
10 – Explore the Dodoma Central Market
The Dodoma Central Market is a vibrant hub of activity and a treasure trove of goods waiting to be discovered. It is close to Makole Market. Here, you’ll find everything from fresh produce and spices to colorful fabrics and handicrafts. Lose yourself in the maze of stalls and interact with friendly vendors as you shop for souvenirs or sample local delicacies. The market is a feast for the senses, with enticing aromas, lively chatter, and a kaleidoscope of colors at every turn.
